Aguereberry Point- Death Valley National Park, California

Elevation: 6,433 feet

Aguereberry Point was named for Pete Aguereberry by the Automobile Club of Southern California shortly after Death Valley became a National Monument.

The unpaved road leading to Aguereberry Point drives past a ghost-town named Harrisburg. Originally this town was to be named Harrisberry after the two men who found the gold that launched it in 1905. Shorty Harris later took credit for the strike and changed the name of the town to Harrisburg after himself. Nevertheless, Pete Aguereberry, one of the original strike finders, spent 40 years working his claims in the Eureka gold mine. Harrisburg was a tent city that grew to support a population of 300. Today nothing remains of the town but Pete’s home and mine which are located to the right two miles down the dirt road to Aguereberry Point. (http://www.nps.gov/deva/Ghost-towns.htm)

Accessibility:

Hike a short way from the dirt lot at end of road to look down over the valley. The unpaved dirt road in is about 6.3 mile one way. It is usually in pretty good shape. Aguereberry Point Road can be reached from the Emigrant Canyon/Wildrose Canyon road.

Suggestions for your visit:

The Aguereberry Point Road leads past Aguereberry Camp. Pete Aguereberry lived here until 1938. He worked the nearby Eureka mine. The mine has been stabilized and you can explore it with a flashlight throughout most of the year. It is closed sometimes by the Park due to bat hibernation in the mine. Aguereberry Point is nice sunrise/sunset point.
