Albuquerque to San Francisco

I was in Albuquerque and just finished working at the Balloon Festival held every year. My next marketing event was Fleet Week and it was in San Francisco. I looked over my map to find the route in which I would take. I had been driving mostly on the Interstates over the past few months as I had little time between events and had to get to the next city quickly. I had a day or two to spare and looked over the map for a few minutes to see what lied between the two cities.  Shiprock, New Mexico- I have never been but have seen photos. This path took me off the Interstate and onto the back roads.

From Albuquerque to Shiprock over to Monument Valley through Utah onto HWY 50 in Nevada and into San Francisco.

City/ Trip Background Info:

Albuquerque is a city full of fun attractions and activities, from the Historic Old Town where it was founded in 1706 to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The city is a great blend of American culture from the past to the present.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has grown to become the largest balloon event in the world. Held each year in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the first week in October, the Balloon Fiesta draws hundreds of balloons and over 1,000 pilots.

The Ship Rock landform, located in northwestern New Mexico, is the remnant of an explosive volcanic eruption that occurred around 30 million years ago. The main part of the landform is 600 meters high, and 500 meters in diameter.

Shiprock (the town) is the largest Navajo community in the Navajo Nation. The community of Shiprock is located 28 miles west of Farmington on U.S. 64.

Monument Valley is a Navajo Nation tribal park, straddling the border of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah of the Colorado Plateau. The area is entirely within the Navajo Indian Reservation near the small Indian town of Goulding, establised in 1923 as a trading post.

Lodging is located 30 minutes north and south of Monument Valley in Mexican Hat, UT and Kayenta, AZ.

Monument Valley is just over 300 miles from Albuquerque.

One of the longest highways in the United States is Highway 50, which stretches from Ocean City, Maryland, to Sacramento, California- 3,073 miles long. US 50 in Nevada roughly follows the path of the Pony Express riders.

Highway 50 crosses the center of Nevada from Lake Tahoe on the west through Carson City, Dayton, Fallon, Austin, Eureka and Ely to Baker and Great Basin National Park on the east.

My Trip:

I arrived in San Francisco and drove directly to the event that I would working at. Fleet Week is the Bay Area’s opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women of our nation’s Navy and Marine services. During Fleet Week the skies above the San Francisco waterfront transform into an aerial gymnasium as the U.S. Navy Blue Angels take flight as the air show headliners. Admission is free.

Quick Facts:

Albuquerque is located in an elevated valley between the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande in central New Mexico. It's approximately 240mi (385km) north of the Mexican border and 55mi (90km) southwest of Santa Fe.
